ANT
The following is an excerpt of Mike McCarthy's interview with Chip that appeared in his zine, Ant.
MM: I noticed that the Tweaked album credits Donnie with lead guitar and Gino with
guitar. In the future, will Gino be the lead guitarist , or is Donnie going to do full time
lead?
CZ: I would think that they'd both play lead. They both play lead guitar. Both cats. And
you can tell both their styles. They've both got very distinct guitar styles. They both have
very different sounds, too. I think it's a real nice combination. So to answer your
question, who cares who drives the bus to the picnic as long as we get there, you know?
MM: In the beginning of "Mr. Jones", what is that noise and then who laughs
right after?
CZ: That's Donnie laughing in the beginning of "Mr. Jones". The sound effect is just
like an old thing off an old Led Zepplin record, actually. It's just a snare drum flanged.
MM: "Bullet From A Gun". Is that you singing that?
CZ: Yeah. Well, I sing on all the Enuff Z'nuff records, but I sing lead on a couple of
tracks on this record. When Donnie and I listened to the record it seemed to fit right for
them tunes. "Bullet From A Gun" and "My Heroin" were two songs that showed a
different side of the group.
MM: Musically, "Bullet" reminds me of Stone Temple Pilot's "Vasoline", particularly the
guitar riff-
CZ:-- Hope were not in any trouble.
MM: I doubt it. The song itself is very different, very original, but are you a fan of them?
Is that a vibe you were influenced by?
CZ: I'll be honest with you, that song's three years old. It's an old one I pulled out of the
hat. I was showing the guys on acoustic guitar and everyone was like, this is fuckin'
great. So, we tracked it one afternoon at Startracks in Chicago and the basic sounded
really cool. I was only singing it to give Donnie a reference vocal. I thought Donnie
was gonna sing it, but he listened to it and said, man I like your vibe on this one, we
should just keep it. So that's what we ended up doing. But as far as the Stone Temple
Pilots go, I think they're a pretty good band, yeah. I don't own any of their records, but
that's only because I hear them on the radio every single day. You don't really have to go
out and buy the record, but they've got some good songs and stuff. There's alot of good
bands coming out right now. I'm just wondering if any of them were listening to us
before they came out because there's certainly some sounds there--some influences--there
and I'm just curious.
