The June 2002 Issue

Hey gang! For this issue I have an interview that John did with me about his trip to Canada to play with Wendy Ip. Jeff sent me a bunch of pictures from 3 different shows. One set from the Shack, one from McCool’s and also The Double Door as well. They will be up on the site under “fan photos” by clicking on Jeff’s name “sometime” during the month of June so keep your eyes peeled. Also a Donnie threewind and a video that Keavin did in California that you can get to from the newsletter on the site or pasting the site addresses listed below into a new window browser. An excerpt from “Over The Edge” on some behind the scene features to come in June. Plus some information for you about the next disc as yet to be released and news regarding a “possible” contribution to a George Harrison tribute disc.

I spoke with Chip recently and the CD is all completed and they have a “working” title for it. “Welcome To Blue Island”. Working titles are often not used when the final product is released so PLEASE remember this before anyone makes a post to the board or an inquiry. It could very well change and Chip also said while they don’t have a home for the record as of yet they WILL! So everyone please be patient because you won’t be disappointed and they are looking for the best label to promote it properly. Onto the business at hand…

News from the front:

The new Enuff Z’nuff album looks set to be released in Japan, July 17 through their Pony Canyon label.
The track listing is as follows:

1. Z Overture
2. Saturday
3. Can't Wait
4. Good Times (Are Hard To Find)
5. Sanibel Island
6. I've Fallen in Love Again
7. Roll Me <bonus track>
8. Roller Bladin’ in the Shade
9. Man Without a Heart
10. Zentimental Journey
11. The Sun

One other piece that I thought I would pass onto you all. A tribute disc dedicated to George Harrison is in the works and some pretty big names are mentioned for the recording. I was told from the person coordinating the project that Enuff Z’nuff would be asked to contribute to the record. Have any ideas what Harrison song they should do if all things go as planned? I have my choice but I’d be curious what songs you all think they would do justice to the best in GH’s memory…

Johnny Monaco with Wendy Ip in Canada:

How did you become acquainted with her?

I was introduced to her web site by my photographer www.shutterpop.com Peter Kuehl who had meet her last year at the Los Angeles IPO Festival.  She was in town here in Chicago for another IPO fest and I met her at the "meet & greet". (so I guess those really work) She was gonna do the show solo/ piano so I told her I might be able to learn the songs (in the 2 days I had) and play acoustic w/ her.  So we did it and that's that.

Did her music peak your interest?

Yeah, I liked it a lot.

You spent a week out there. Did you know her music beforehand or did you rehearse in the week leading up to the show?

I had a cd of the songs like a week b4 I left.  When I got there the band rehearsed 2x.  The drummer Jarett & bass player Troy live out there and had been listening to the cd already.  Wendy lives in NYC.

How did she find out about you?

I emailed her after I listened to the Mp3's.  She still hasn’t found out about me though. (haha)

Her music is available on MP3.com. Does she do well popularity wise in the Seattle, Vancouver area?

She's from Canada but spends most of her time in NYC.  I can't really say from the one show but there was a real good turn out.  She has fans out there!!

Is she on the verge of a deal?

Yeah, she's talking to a few labels right now.  I think it's a good time right now for what she's doing musically.

Her music uses fairly clean guitar work as apposed to distortion guitar. Did you enjoy the change in style?

Sure.

What would you categorize her music as?

Beatle-esque / modern melodic-pop

Will you be doing more work with her and or recording?

It's possible.

 Part two:

You say Wendy lives in NY. You traveled to Canada to play with her. Does she do a lot of touring? Is she mostly popular in the east or out west?

Yea she goes all over the place.  She’s gonna be in LA for the IPO fest in July.

Does the northwest offer her better exposure for her musical style or was she merely out there at the time?

She was there specifically for the New Music West showcase.

The Beatles heavily influences you and I thought her music sounded similar to their style. Would you have any interest in joining her band if she did get signed?

Possibly, but I need to work with my band right now.

Does she do her own writing or does she collaborate with different people or her band?

She writes it all.

I've listened to some of her music and it's “eclectic” sounding to me as well as the Beatles style. Would you agree?

Yea I think it's a good mix.  The newer stuff you haven't heard yet incorporates electronic loops as well.  Sounds real good.

Finally. You left on the 5th of May I believe. Did they fly you out there and did you and Wendy seem to gel while playing?

Yea they flew me out for the week.  Yea we got along real good.  I just tried to play the parts as true as possible & added a few things here & there (just like in EZN).  I sang the harmonies too as much as I could.  I think she was pleased.

Thanks John!

Enuff Z Nuff

Episode I
Airdate: June 2002

From hit videos on MTV, appearances on the Tonight Show and Howard Stern, to a catalogue of ten full-length albums released to date, Enuff Z Nuff have been a part of the national music scene since the late 80’s. Their melodic pop-flavored rock and roll has definite influence derived from the Beatles, but stretches out to incorporate bluesy, groove-laden hooks as well.

“Enuff Z Nuff is by far one of my favorite bands in the world, and it’s thrilling for me to be working with them,” enthuses executive producer Juliette Miranda. “Their songwriting is incredible, and Donnie Vie’s voice never ceases to amaze me.”

Production status:
Live concert footage from their packed show at the Double Door this past April has been shot. Interviews with bassist Chip Z Nuff and vocalist Donnie Vie have also been completed, as well as backstage and behind-the-scenes footage. Episode goes to editing this May, and will detail the band’s current projects.
