New EZN Express Newsletter
Hello Z'nuffers and welcome to the new EZN Express newsletter!
After a hiatus of nearly one year instead of a monthly newsletter it will now be at
least 4 times a year so that we might give you a more informative look into the band and the goings on.
For this (bonus) issue I have decided to put some background about the guys you may not have known. So here goes...
For those Donnie fanatics out there in case you didn't know he is friends with well-known film director Cameron Crowe. Jerry
MaGuire, Almost Famous being a couple. For the film Jerry MaGuire Cameron picked one of the bands songs for
his soundtrack to the movie. The song was "Bring It On Home" from the Animals With Human Intelligence disc. While it appears on the film credits it does not
appear in the movie or soundtrack. "The decision had nothing to do with Cameron" as Donnie explained to me. Donnie said he liked Cameron's films and
in turn Cameron being the down to earth guy that he is wanted to return the favor. Unfortunately as Donnie put it, "the cigar smoking fat cats who know nothing about music left it off the record"! But... the band was still paid a tidy sum
of money for it's appearance on the film credits. "Cameron's my buddy" Donnie explained. Chip added that if it made it to the soundtrack as Cameron wanted
with the film grossing as much as it did "we would probably be millionaires by now."
Also on the Donnie front is a side project he has been working on called "The Fireflies" from California. He last told me that they are on the backburner
because he wants to devote all of his energies into the band at the moment and will devote more time in the near future to this project.
No love lost between Donnie, Chip and "The Nelson Brothers" these days. It seems that Donnie penned a couple of tunes for them and they changed them
from their original form and left Donnie's name off of the credits completely! The
Nelson boys would not have had the song ideas if it wasn't for Donnie regardless
of them making some changes so lets just say Donnie has had to resort to using legal means to get his just dues.
Chip as you may or may not know is the band's leader. He can hold 3 conversations at once, literally! He handles most of the bands business and has
his own record label called Stoney Records. He is often in his office conducting
interviews for the band as well as dealing with up and coming bands and handling contracts for Enuff Z'nuff and scheduling. Even when he is done with a
show Chip is still hard at work. In Allentown at a Crocodile Rock show last year
while trying to relax in his room after another show well done he was busy signing forms and reading agreements that Tom was passing to him. All this
while holding a conversation and giving us a preview of "10" before it came out in Japan and giving insight into his vast knowledge of the business. He was a speaker in Philadelphia just prior to this on the music business in which many
people I have run into that were there spoke of Chip's honesty and candor about the do's and don't of the business.
For those of you who don't have Junebug's CD on his Stoney label Chip penned the
majority of the songs with the band which when listened to have his style written all over them! The disc can be purchased online at:
www.stoneyrecords.com or at one of their shows at the merchandise table. It's a worthwhile pickup!
Ricky has to be seen live to appreciate the power of his drumming. Donnie said he has to play on 10 because of how hard Ricky hits! He also can be found after
shows signing autographs and talking to fans frequently. He doubles on the side for Monaco in his band
Low-Tek as his drummer whenever there is a gig in the Chicago area. Born in New Jersey he played in local bands there until he was
tapped by Chip and Donnie to replace Vikki Foxx. Some of his highschool female friends brought out a picture book of Ricky back in the old days when he was in
town to bring back some memories of Ricky with some BIG hair! He got a good laugh at them and was amazed at all the pictures the girls had of him. Ricky
seems to be a fan favorite with a lot of the women. Olive colored skin and a shirtless upper torso and smile gets the women
everytime! If you got it then use it!
Monaco has been with the band since Geno left the fray. Geno was not a fan of touring and was a quiet but talented guitarist who has a music store in the
Chicago area last I heard. He was also in the band in the beginning before Derek
(aka/ Kurt Fang) Friggo entered the picture. Monaco lives farther away from the rest of the band and for recording purposes Donnie and Chip do much of the
guitar work in the studio. Always practicing Monaco has amassed quite an array of skills on the guitar. He can shred with the best of them live! As a guitar player
for 27 years I can testify to this. To listen to some of his recorded work with the
band on Paraphernalia he does the solo in "Ain't It Funny", "No Place To Go" and
E-Bow on Unemotional I believe. Forgive me if I'm wrong John! Much of "Ten" was done at various different times and as Chip explained Monaco did not play much on the disc. He has his own band in which he fronts called
Low-Tek as well. I have an original demo version of disc in which he recorded everything on a
4-track machine. He does all of the lead vocals for this band and has a surprising
voice! Since then his debut has officially been released and can be found on any
of the links from: www.eznexpress.com to any of the other band dedicated sites that Rik for Peachfuzz and Jeremy Znuff.com have. Check out his band if you get
the chance! And of course he always enjoys his Spaghetti Sunday's at his parents house. You have to be Italian to appreciate this. Or maybe not?
Until next time I hope you've enjoyed this little trip into the band we all love...
